Eye Donation
We all must have seen the advertisement on television years ago by the lady with the most beautiful eyes on this earth who pledged to donate her eyes & see this world even after she has gone . But has this sensation died out? We surely think so.
Even today there are more than a million blind people in our country, of whom almost 30% are children who are waiting for corneal transplantation. Do you not believe that we are doing injustice to them by burying/ burning our eyes. The only way we can help them is by just spreading the light of awareness our peers about the noble gesture of eye donation.
Today the biggest hurdle for us as eye surgeons is the education of people to clarify their myths about the procedure. We want to request each of our readers to become our volunteer to pass this message to all those are known to them & to strengthen our movement for giving sight to all- What we call "Sight donation".
By means of this, we want to clarify that eyes cannot be sold or bought by any one. It is only a noble gesture that the family of diseased would make in memory of their passed away dear one to allow him to continue to live & let one more life light up & see this beautiful world. Any person of any age, sex, or religion can donate eyes. All religious groups endorse eye donation. This does not lead to any deformity in the future birth.
FACTS ABOUT EYE DONATION
Eyes can be collected within 6 hours of death. Along with eye collection, a few mls of blood would be collected to test for transmittable diseases. Eyes are transplanted to the eye bank for processing form where they are distributed to surgeons.
DOS AT THE TIME OF DONATION
- Call nearest eye bank
- Switch off fan & can keep AC on
- Keep moist cloth or cotton on eyes
- Keep eyes closed
- keep pillow under the head.
The nearest eye bank team will arrive & take consent from the next of the kin & the procedure takes less than 15 minutes & would not interfere with further rituals.
